By the time you read this the legislative session will be over, and I am hopeful that the hard work from our legislative team will have paid off by getting bills passed that will improve the civil justice system. I write to you with two weeks left in session, and as always, we are coming down to the wire. The Senate passed bills to raise the non-economic damages cap, expand the scope of voir dire questions, and prohibit exculpatory clauses. Multiple workers’ compensation bills are also still alive and being considered. The fight to get these bills passed into law continues. The effort from volunteers from this organization this session has been nothing short of extraordinary. You should be proud of the work your fellow members have put into fighting for what is right. No matter how it turns out, I want to thank everyone who has been involved in the legislative process, including the almost 100 trial lawyers who came to the largest Justice Day ever. I hope we have 200 next year so our legislators can learn about the challenges our clients face and how they can make things better.

The theme of this issue is workers’ compensation, a topic near and dear to my heart as I represent injured workers as part of my practice. We were unfortunately just reminded of the danger present while on the job with the tragic loss of six construction workers who were killed in the Key Bridge collapse. Now more than ever we need committed and passionate advocates for the rights of the injured worker. Our work is pivotal in getting them the treatment, wage benefits, and permanent injury compensation they are due when they get hurt on the job. Workers’ compensation cases are some of the most rewarding cases you can handle, as you play a key role in getting your client better, getting their family taken care of, and getting them back to work.

As this is my last President’s Message, I want to say it has been an honor to serve you this past year. Leading this organization has given me so much appreciation and respect for our staff and members’ dedication to helping our clients and improving the civil justice system. The amount of time put in by our staff and members to making sure we are educating trial lawyers and trying to create positive change in Annapolis is truly incredible. We have also selected a new generation of leaders to join our Board. I’m excited to see what they will do, and I know our organization will be in good hands.
