I want to start by thanking outgoing president Emily Malarkey for her leadership and vision this past year, and for helping with my transition to President. I also want to thank Alison Dodge and the entire MAJ staff for their hard work throughout the year and for their work in putting on the President’s Dinner. I want to thank all the attendees and the sponsors as well for making it a great event.

I also want to thank all our members, as you are the lifeblood of this organization. In my speech I mentioned the early 1900’s Baltimore Civil Rights lawyer W. Ashbie Hawkins, who said: “The courts are open, and to them we should go, as the citadel of our rights are in the Courts, but Courts are not self-acting institutions. They are formed and maintained for our protection, but their protection is not guaranteed to us unless we appeal to them.” I used this quote because it reminded me of the work that we do every day to protect our client’s interests and to keep the courthouse doors open so that we can obtain justice and hold wrongdoers accountable.

This quote is also relevant as we continue to try to strengthen our organization. I encourage all our members to join the Legislative Leaders Circle, as that is how we protect our interests in Annapolis. If you are a member, please consider upgrading your membership or recruiting others to join. The LLC supports the work of the MAJ Legislative Committee and the MAJ PAC. Both are non-partisan with the goal of advancing the civil justice system and protecting the rights of our clients to seek justice. The LLC also has an exclusive list server that provides legislative updates to our LLC members throughout the legislative session. I also encourage you to get involved with a Committee or Section of MAJ. We are only strong as an organization if our members are actively involved.

This coming year will be an exciting one for MAJ. We are planning to revive the Maryland Association for Justice Foundation and are planning a fundraiser and charitable events. Your support and participation will be appreciated. We are currently formulating our legislative agenda and priorities, please join the Legislative Committee if you are interested in being involved with our legislative work. I also encourage you to apply to be a Board of Governors member when the nominating committee seeks candidates in December. We are looking for a range of diversity and experience on the Board of Governors and look forward to talking to interested candidates.

If you would like to join LLC or a section or committee, please reach out to me at (410) 730-7737 or to the MAJ office at (410) 872-0990. I am honored to serve as your President and would be happy to talk to any of our members about how they can become more involved with MAJ.
