I hope you all had a relaxing summer with your friends and family. MAJ has been hard at work planning for a successful year for our members, both educationally and legislatively. We have a full calendar of programs and events for the upcoming year, I encourage you to check out the Events and Programs page on the MAJ website for the full schedule.

We are gearing up for the upcoming 2024 legislative session. I encourage you to join the Legislative Committee if you are interested in helping our mission in Annapolis. We meet every other Monday as we head into session and then weekly in session. We discuss strategy with our lobbyists and members and go over our legislative goals and priorities. I want to take a moment to thank our in-house Legislative Director, Chris Figueras who has been a great addition to our team. I want to give a special thank you to Kelly Donohue who has been chair of our Legislative Committee for the past few years. Kelly has decided to step down as MAJ Legislative Committee Chair. We thank her for making an enormous impact on our advocacy work and I am personally grateful that she has committed to remain an active member of the Legislative Committee. I am pleased to announce that I have appointed Bruce Plaxen as Legislative Chair for the 2024 session and appreciate his willingness to take on this role again.

Justice Day 2024 will be held on February 8, 2024. Justice Day is when MAJ members go to Annapolis to meet with legislators and explain why our legislative priorities help protect Marylanders and make our state safer. I would love to see well over 100 trial lawyers come this year. We are 1200 members strong; I know we can get at least 10% down to Annapolis to let the General Assembly know our strength! Please consider signing up for Justice Day and you can contact me or the MAJ office for more details.

I encourage all our members to join the Legislative Leaders Circle, as that is how we protect our interests in Annapolis. If you are a member, please consider upgrading your membership or recruiting others to join. The LLC supports the work of the MAJ Legislative Committee and the MAJ PAC. Both are non-partisan with the goal of advancing the civil justice system and protecting the rights of our clients to seek justice. The LLC also has an exclusive list server that provides legislative updates to our LLC members throughout the legislative session. We will also be having a holiday party for LLC members on December 6, 2023.

We have also started a new Sexual Abuse Section now that the statute of limitations has been lifted for past cases of sexual abuse in the wake of the devastating Attorney General’s Report on Child Sexual Abuse in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Please consider joining this section as the survivors need the full resources of our members and MAJ in their fight for justice.

A call for nominations for the Board of Governors and for Parliamentarian recently went out. One of the best ways to get involved and make a difference is to join the Board of Governors. I strongly encourage you to apply. If you would like more information about applying for the Board please reach out to me. Nominations are due no later than December 22, 2023.

It is an honor to serve as your President. Please let me know if you’d like to get more involved in MAJ, join LLC, or have other ideas for our members.
